SAN FRANCISCO – A furious fourth-quarter surge couldn't overcome a shaky third period as the No. 20 state-ranked College of San Mateo women's basketball team suffered a 65-64 loss at No. 12 City College of San Francisco on Wednesday night in both teams' Coast Conference North Division opener.
The Bulldogs suffered just their fifth loss of the season, falling to 13-5 overall and 0-1 in the Coast North.
CSM held a slim 34-33 advantage at halftime before scoring just nine points in the third, allowing the Rams to jump out in front. The Bulldogs went on to outscore CCSF 21-16 over the final 10-minute period but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Jayonnah Carter and Joslyn Moore both scored 15 points each to lead the Bulldogs. Deanna Ayo had 12 points and Ariel Petalver added 11. Simone Murray contributed 5 points and 6 boards off the bench.
San Mateo is back in action on Jan. 17 when the Bulldogs travel to Chabot College for a 5 p.m. Coast Conference North Division game.
