  • Title:
    Assistant Coach

Bio

Matt Lawrence is in his 10th year as an assistant coach at the College of San Mateo. He joined the coaching staff early in the 2015 season. Before working on staff at CSM, Matt had never coached softball, but his vast baseball background helped him transition nicely into his new coaching role. He is extremely grateful to be here at the College of San Mateo and help continue the winning tradition.

Prior to the College of San Mateo, Lawrence was coaching baseball in his hometown of Arbuckle at Pierce High School. He was an assistant coach for nine years. Due to an injury with his arm when he was 18, he was unable to continue playing at a high level. He changed his passion for playing into a passion for coaching and helping others develop and learn to also appreciate the game.

Lawrence was an extremely valuable member of the Pierce High School baseball coaching staff. He was in charge of the outfielders and pitchers, and assisted with the offensive game plan as the first base coach. He provided valuable insights that helped build a winning program. The knowledge that he brought to the field everyday concerning the game is extensive, however he is always willing to listen and learn.

Since being on staff for the CSM softball team, Matt has worked in various roles. His fluidity helps head coach with whatever is needed at the time. He has worked with outfielders, caught bullpens in his first years, worked with infielders, and from 2017-2021 he coached first base. He continues to do whatever is needed of him and be there to help the team to succeed in whatever way possible.

Lawrence holds a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology from Notre Dame De Namur.
