Bulldogs Swimmers Find Success at Home During Coast Conference Championships
The College of San Mateo swim program enjoyed strong individual and team performances during the recent Coast Conference Championships hosted at CSM. The three-day event included over 200 swimmers from 22 teams representing 12 schools in the Coast Conference. The Bulldogs women's team finished fifth out of 12 schools while the men's roster also placed fifth out of 10 teams.
The women were led by Claire Lowings and her two third-place finishes in individual events - the 200 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. Iya Bonus finished fifth in each of her three individual events - the 500 Freestyle, 100 Butterfly, and 200 Freestyle.
Other individual event highlights for the women's team were Anjali Marwah's fourth place in the 100 Breaststroke, and Gizel Ortiz finishing fourth in the 100 IM. The relay team of Sascha Ebinger, Shayla Wong, Madison Godley, and Sophia Christian were also fourth in the 800 Freestyle Relay.
The CSM men were paced by Alec Sasano and Alvin Chan, who both medaled in multiple individual events and relays.
Sasano finished third in all three of his individual events - the 500 Freestyle, 400 IM, and 200 Breaststroke. Chan placed second in the 50 Freestyle, then followed up with a first-place finish to be conference champion in the 100 Freestyle. His victory was voted by conference coaches as the Men's Performance of the Meet.
Other individual medal winners for the men were David Silvestre finishing third in the 200 Backstroke, and Olin Gawel placing third as well in the 200 Freestyle. The relay combination of Silvestre, Sasano, Chan, and Gawel finished third in both the 400 Medley Relay and 200 Medley Relay. And the team of Sasano, Roman Brush, Enzo Pozzobon, and Tristan Renaud earned a second-place finish in the 800 Freestyle Relay.
With the regular season now completed, the Bulldogs await announcement of qualifications for the 3C2A State Championships to be held May 1-3 at Santa Rosa Junior College.
