State No. 3 CSM volleyball team continues hot streak after coach has son

Coach Katie Goldhahn missed College of San Mateo's women's volleyball match with visiting Ohlone College Wednesday evening. The former Stanford volleyball star gave birth to a baby boy at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City about eight hours earlier.

That did not stop the state No. 3 ranked Lady Bulldogs (14-3) from winning their ninth straight contest -- a quick 3-set sweep of the Renegades, 25-8, 25-4, 25-14. Under the direction of assistant coach Nicole Rathman, outside hitter Naomie Cremoux had 16 kills and Grace Thayer contributed eight. Zooey Walsworth had seven service aces as CSM went to 4-0 in Coast North play. (Rathman is the daughter of 2-time SF 49ers Super Bowl champion Tom Rathman.) Ohlone fell to 1-3 (5-17 overall).

HAT TRICK FOR CSM WOMEN'S COACHES:
Goldhahn maintained a 21st century "tradition" for CSM's three women head coaches, who have now each given birth in successive decades. First up in the century was basketball coach Michelle Warner. (Her daughter Joelle now plays on the Bulldogs basketball team.) Softball coach Nicole Quigley Borg continued the tradition the next decade, giving birth just as CSM was embarking on a state playoff run.

Goldhahn does not expect to be away from the College Heights gymnasium for long. She was hoping to be released from the hospital on Thursday. Rumors were flowing (after Wednesday's match) that Goldhahn might try to grab a peak at Friday night's first place volleyball showdown with visiting Cabrillo College at 6:30 p.m. Both are 4-0 in Coast North play.

Defending Coast North Conference champion Cabrillo, currently ranked 14th in the state, has lost only one Coast match since 2009 -- at CSM last season. Cabrillo brought a Coast record 121-match winning streak into the 2021 league contest at San Mateo – and lost in four sets to the Bulldogs.

STREAKING BULLDOGS: Both teams came into this week with their only losses in the last nine outings coming from state No. 1 Feather River College, which leads the state with a 22 match winning streak. CSM is second in NorCal with its now 9-contest skein. Except for two setbacks from Feather River and a split with American River, CSM has defeated all other 2022 foes. That includes a 5-set triumph over defending state champion Fresno City College.

NOTES: Cabrillo won the 2021 rematch with CSM, in Aptos, to secure a 14th straight Coast North title. San Mateo had dropped a crossover match with West Valley -- so finished in second place. Crossover contests do not count in the Coast standings this year. CSM has won its crossovers with the top three Coast South teams this season.
