Evans goes the distance in shutout victory over Cypress in state championships opener

WALNUT – Freshman Lia Evans kept her perfect record intact as she tossed a complete-game shutout to help lead North No. 2-seed College of San Mateo to a 3-0 win over South No. 3 Cypress College in the Bulldogs' opening game of the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) State Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

Evans allowed just two hits and struck out five batters to improve her record to 11-0 overall this season.

Defending state champion CSM was held to four hits in the contest but took advantage of three errors by the Chargers to score a pair of unearned runs. Vanessa Lang smacked an RBI-single up the middle to score Isabella Cowne as part of a two-run, fourth-inning rally for the Bulldogs.

With the win, San Mateo improved to 38-7 overall. The Bulldogs advance to Round 2 and will take on South No. 1-seed Palomar College on Friday at 2 p.m. The game can be viewed live online for free at https://baosn.tv/.

The Comets moved to a state-best 41-1 this season thanks to their 4-1 win over Folsom Lake College earlier on Thursday.

CSM and Palomar will meet for the first time this season. The winner will take on either South No. 2 Mt. SAC or South No. 4 Cerritos College in the state championship semifinals on Saturday.
