Moffitt leads San Mateo past Cypress

BAKERSFIELD - Chloe Moffitt provided the late-game heroics to deliver the College of San Mateo a 7-4 win over Cypress College to open day two of the 2022 CCCAA Softball Tournament.

San Mateo, the #1 seed from Northern California, advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of Mt. San Antonio College and Santa Ana tomorrow at noon at Bakersfield College.

The Southern California #2 seed Chargers will face the winner of San Jose City College and Butte College in an elimination game tonight at 8 p.m.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning and the game tied 3-3, Moffitt stepped up to the plate and blasted a shot over the center-field fence to bring in Sarah Giles and Logan Bonetti. Two batters later, Celeste Casillas added an insurance run when she doubled in Kealani Cardona to put the score at 7-3.

Moffitt had an incredible all-around game for the Bulldogs. Offensively, she finished with four RBIs, 3-3 at the plate with a double, and two runs. In the circle, she pitched four and two-thirds innings of relief and allowed no runs to improve her record to 21-0.

Lafu Malepeai gave San Mateo its first lead of the game in the top of the second when she doubled in Jada Walker and Moffitt to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 advantage. Bonetti finished the game with three hits.

Cypress took the opening lead of the game in the first when Alyssa Huerta hit a hard shot past the pitcher that sent Eliana Mora to the plate. The Chargers retook the lead in the third inning off a Paige Shafer single that scored Jordan Thompson and Emily Rush. Huerta led the Chargers with two hits.
