Goulding picks up first win as head coach, Bulldogs split opening weekend games

SAN MATEO – It didn't take long for new College of San Mateo baseball head coach Riley Goulding to earn his first career victory. On Friday, the Bulldogs opened the 2024 season with a 5-1 win over visiting Cabrillo College.

That was followed by a 5-1 loss at College of Marin on Saturday to close out opening weekend.

CSM freshman JoJo Cardinale's debut was just as impressive as Goulding's on Friday. The right fielder began his Bulldog career going 4 for 4 at the plate with 2 RBI. He came through with run-scoring singles in the third and eighth innings and added a double.

Vicente Feliciano knocked in a pair, smacking an RBI triple that got CSM on the board in the second. His RBI double followed Cardinale in the eighth to close out San Mateo's scoring.

Danny Peters earned the opening-day win on the mound after allowing 1 run and 2 hits over 5 innings. He struck out six and walked one. Chris Walsh picked up the save, tossing 4 scoreless innings to finish out the win.

CSM couldn't keep the momentum going in Marin. The Mariners scored four times in the bottom of the second to put the game out of reach.

Charlie Welch had 2 RBI to lead the Bulldogs offense. He had an RBI single while his fielder's choice ground out also brought in a run.

San Mateo, now 1-1 overall, returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 30) when the Bulldogs host Hartnell College in a 1:30 p.m. game.
